Collaboration between two Schiedam companies, De Bonte Koe and The Seaweed Company, results in 'a unique chocolate bar with impact'.
The 'Caramel Royal Kombu Seaweed' is a vegan bar with 55 percent cocoa, caramelized sugar and organic Royal Kombu seaweed from Zeeland. According to the initiators, this is the first bar with organic seaweed from Dutch waters. Chocolate maker and seaweed product developer state that sales of the bar 'contribute to biodiversity in the ocean'. For every bar sold, a piece of seaweed farm the size of an A4 sheet is built. With their seaweed farms, The Seaweed Company aims to sustainably cultivate seaweed all over the world and to develop healthy and valuable applications based on seaweed.
Furthermore, De Bonte Koe donates one euro for each bar to the Stichting Surfkids Shredding Senegal. According to owner Connor Klein of De Bonte Koe, it was 'his dream' to develop a bar that reflects his love for chocolate and the waves.
With the production and sale of the bar, the two companies also want to increase the general public's awareness of seaweed. And to draw attention to the positive effects of seaweed on the climate. "Seaweed absorbs significant amounts of carbon dioxide, which deacidifies the ocean. This promotes the growth and preservation of coral and other marine life."
The seaweed bar is available in the De Bonte Koe stores in Schiedam, The Hague and Rotterdam and online via the webshop.
