Christmas

"Merry Christmas, it's the most wonderful time of the year!" Even though this text sounds a bit cliché, for many people Christmas is indeed the most wonderful and cozy time of the year. You hear Christmas songs everywhere, houses are decorated with wreaths and lights, children are cheerful and if you are lucky, it snows outside and you have a nice fireplace where you can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and delicious chocolates from a beautiful box. Christmas is usually associated with chocolate, but do you actually know why?

The tradition of chocolate at Christmas

To understand the tradition of Christmas chocolate, you must first examine the history of chocolate itself. Since ancient times, chocolate has been considered a food of great value. For the pre-Columbian peoples of Mesoamerica, the cocoa bean was of great importance. The bean was valued for its nutritional value and health benefits and was a valuable product.

In the Middle Ages, chocolate was introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers who discovered it in Central America with the Aztecs and Mayans. By the 16th and 17th centuries, only the elite had the privilege of enjoying these delicious, but expensive treats.

It was not until the 19th century, when cocoa finally became more accessible to the general public, that chocolate makers in several Western European countries, in an attempt to innovate, began creating festive chocolates to celebrate Christmas.

As you know, Santa Claus, riding on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, rewards good children every Christmas Eve with presents under the Christmas tree and in stockings hung by the fireplace. Chocolate was associated with this tradition because chocolate was a popular and affordable way to give presents to children.

Chocolate at Christmas

Nowadays, Christmas chocolates are everywhere, but you have to be careful because they are not all the same. While some companies rely on mass-produced, poor quality chocolate, other companies like De Bonte Koe only make the best quality handmade chocolate with the tastiest ingredients, to ensure that your Christmas is filled with joy and laughter instead of indigestion!

In case you didn’t know, Christmas is a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus, who was known to be a very generous man. Although Santa Claus and Jesus aren’t directly related, Christmas is all about giving, sharing, and receiving! That’s why chocolate has always been associated with the Christmas season. What better way to enjoy it together than by sharing treats that will warm your heart in the cold winter and tantalize your taste buds?

Who gets some delicious Christmas chocolates?

Since probably 99.99% of people love chocolate (if they're lucky, of course, but don't worry about that at De Bonte Koe), you can give them to pretty much anyone: your parents, your kids or another family member, your colleagues at work, your friends... Or just have a nice box at home to share with your loved ones when they come to visit. And since Santa Claus isn't really the one delivering the chocolates (sorry for the spoiler), you can even get them if you haven't exactly behaved well this year!

At De Bonte Koe we also love Christmas and that is why we prepare nice surprises every year so that you can always find the perfect gift for everyone. We have special greeting cards or letterbox boxes that you can send to those who are away, original hearts filled with chocolates for those you love the most, gift vouchers for the most demanding, truffles for the most conservative... and much more!

In this way, we ensure that our products are good for your health, sustainable and that we also honor the origin of chocolate. Furthermore, the animal ingredients and nuts that we use are also organically certified. In this way, we also give back to other people. And we do this not only at Christmas, but all year round!

In the consumer frenzy of Christmas, you might want to make a gesture for our planet and buy products from a company that cares about the environment and has a positive social impact.

By offering De Bonte Koe chocolates for Christmas (or any other occasion), you support craftsmanship, local businesses and eco-friendly initiatives. All these values ultimately come together with the great taste of our chocolate in our sustainable boxes. A way to make the Christmas tree even fuller!
