“If you eat this bar during a cheat day, you will still get your necessary protein”
Upfront was founded in January 2020 with the aim of making food fairer by
to develop products with all ingredients and nutritional values on the front of the packaging, or food that you as a consumer understand. "This led to more transparent product development, more honest business operations and ultimately better products," the founders of Upfront write on their website. The company is located in the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam.
The bars, produced by De Bonte Koe in collaboration with Upfront, are for sale via the Upfront website and in the five De Bonte Koe stores. The bars are of the Upfront brand and clearly show all ingredients and nutritional values on the wrapper. The De Bonte Koe logo is also on the front of the wrapper.
Upfront's product range is divided into the categories proteins, products for strength sports, products for endurance sports, supplements, gear and downloads, such as a free course on reading food labels. In the proteins category, Upfront sells, among other things, protein bars in various flavours.
The protein bar is also referred to in English as 'protein bar'. Upfront's range is now being expanded with the chocolate protein bar that is made in the production department of De Bonte Koe at Lange Haven 54 in Schiedam. This chocolate bar contains 20 grams of protein per 100 grams. The normal chocolate bars from De Bonte Koe contain approximately 5 grams of protein per 100 grams. The chocolate protein bar is made of vegan milk chocolate. "There are already protein-rich chocolate bars available, but the product that we are now launching on the market together with Upfront is unique in the sense that the bar consists of high-quality chocolate, made from organic cocoa beans," says Amy Klein, who owns De Bonte Koe together with her brother Connor. "It is good for our development as a craft chocolate company to develop a product with a functional application of ingredients together with Upfront - where transparency, honest business operations, sincerity and refreshing social media use are very explicit parts of the business operations - aimed at sporty people who choose their food very consciously. People who choose protein-rich food at the moments when they need it, for example for muscle building or recovery. How nice is it that what you eat is not only healthy, but also very tasty. If you have a 'cheat day' and eat this chocolate protein bar, you still get the necessary proteins." Amy Klein continues: "It is certainly not the first time that we have developed products with functional applications in collaboration with others. Earlier this year, in collaboration with artist Bob Mollema, we released bars under our own label that can counteract stress, anxiety and fatigue by adding mushrooms. Since last month, we have been making bonbons for The Oh Collective with natural ingredients that can arouse desire."
