The third Sunday of June this year, just like every year, we all celebrate and honor our fathers. To make this Father's Day as special as possible for the man of the house, you can start with a few nice gestures, such as preparing a nice meal or shining his favorite shoes.
But you also need a gift that will surprise him and make him enjoy this special day even more. As in all traditional celebrations, chocolate is usually part of the celebration. But do you know exactly why? Do you actually know why we celebrate fathers? Let’s dive into the history of Father’s Day and give you some advice to help you make this day unforgettable for your beloved dad.
The History of Father's Day
The history of Father's Day may go back as far as Roman times, when fathers were already honored. It happens every year in February, to honor deceased fathers. In Catholic countries, the celebration of fathers has been celebrated since the Middle Ages on March 19, the feast day of St. Joseph, who is recognized as the foster father of Jesus.
But the modern version of Father's Day, as we know it today, can be attributed to American Sonora Smart. She came up with the idea to honor fathers: the idea came to her after listening to a sermon in church on Mother's Day in 1909.
Because her mother had died when she was young, her father Henry Jackson Smart courageously cared for her and her four siblings. June was chosen to celebrate Father's Day because it was her own father's birthday. The first celebration of Father's Day took place 100 years ago in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910, and since then it has been celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States, as well as in many countries around the world.
In the Netherlands, it was first celebrated in 1937, at the initiative of the Dutch Association of Men's Fashion Stores, and initially took place in October. But after a few years, in 1948, the Netherlands switched to the more generally recognized date in June. Like Mother's Day, it is now a tradition to give a gift to the most important male figure in our lives.
Chocolate is always a good idea for Father's Day
Usually, it’s really hard to find gift ideas for our dads. Grown men aren’t known to be the most materialistic, and while they might like a new car or boat, that’s not the kind of gift you’re planning on getting this year, right?
To find the perfect gift, a good starting point is to try to see what sets your dad apart from other people. Fathers are usually recognized for their courage, their ability to remain calm and wise in difficult times. Strong fathers usually sacrifice themselves for their family. And on Father’s Day, it’s time to honor the one who always lets the kids choose their food first and never eats the best parts of the chicken!
On this special day, it’s all about your father and he should be the one to choose first and enjoy the best food. That’s why it’s very common to give your father chocolates for Father’s Day. This way, he can enjoy a tasty treat all to himself.
